HOW TO START THE COUNSELLING PROCESS
Starting counselling is a simple process. It all begins with an inquiry to see if I can meet your needs.
I can also provide a free 15 minute consultation, which requires initial consent for us to communicate, and also requires some basic information from you before we talk. This is all to protect your rights.
At the end of the free consultation, should you decide you wish to work with me, you can book an appointment at any time.
I do online counselling across Canada, and in-person counselling for the Newfoundland Irish Loop area.
HERE ARE THE STEPS
1. First read my "Informed Consent" document under the "Articles" page. It provides important information about your privacy, fees, etc.
2. If you agree with the Informed Consent, then email me at dr.earonkavanagh@gmail.com.
State your interest in counselling, and paste this into your email: "I have read your Informed Consent and I hereby give initial consent".
3. I will then email you from dr.earonkavanagh@proton.me and we can make further arrangements, including a free 15-minute consultation.
4. The free 15-minute consultation requires completion of a simple pre-intake form.
5. At the end of any 15 minute consultation I will ask if you want to book a counselling session. This is solely to attend to your needs. You are free to book a session at any time.
6. In your first session, you and I will collaboratively concentrate what you present and what might help you. This is where we, together, assess your situation, your strengths, and more. This is sometimes referred to as 'initial evaluation' and can take at least 3 sessions.
7. After initial evaluation I will make some suggestions including a treatment plan. Treatment, which is also collaborative, usually requires 6 to 10 sessions for most client situations. Other situations, such as addiction and serious mental health issues may require longer periods of therapeutic engagement.
